Air India has embarked on a significant fleet modernization journey with the recent completion of its first Boeing 777-300ER aircraft refresh. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance passenger comfort and align the airline's branding across its fleet. The refresh process, conducted in Singapore, took approximately 50 days and focused on updating cabin interiors with new carpets, seat covers, cushions, and repairing damaged seats.
Key Features of the Refresh
-
Cabin Upgrades: The refreshed aircraft features updated seat covers, cushions, and carpets, reflecting Air India's new branding. While this refresh does not include hardware upgrades like new seats or entertainment systems, it significantly improves the aesthetic appeal of the cabins.
-
Operational Deployment: Initially, the refreshed planes will operate on domestic routes for a short period before being redeployed on ultra-long-haul flights connecting major cities in the U.S. and Canada, such as Toronto, Vancouver, San Francisco, Chicago, Newark, and New York.
Challenges and Future Plans
Air India's plans to retrofit its Boeing 777 fleet with new seats and entertainment systems have been delayed due to supply chain issues. As a result, the airline opted for a "heavy refresh" to maintain service standards while awaiting full retrofitting, which is now scheduled to commence in early 2026. The full refresh of all 13 Boeing 777 aircraft is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
